1981-82 Topps - Kevin McHale #75
This is Kevin McHale's official rookie card — the 1981-82 Topps #75 (East) — from one of the most historically significant and structurally unique sets in the entire vintage basketball hobby.
Why this card matters: The 1981-82 Topps set would turn out to be the last basketball product the company issued until the 1992-93 season , making every rookie card from this release a true era-defining piece. Larry Bird (#4), Magic Johnson (#21), and Julius Erving (#30) anchor the set, and rookie cards include Kevin McHale (#E75) and Bill Laimbeer.
The regional factor adds real scarcity. The regional print sheet held one copy of each of the 132 regional cards, so each regional card is theoretically half as plentiful as each national card. A 66-card national set was issued to all parts of the country; the national set is easier to acquire than any of the regional issues. McHale's card lives exclusively in the East subset — it was never part of the nationally distributed run.
The player behind the cardboard: McHale was part of what many consider the league's best-ever frontline with Larry Bird and Robert Parish — the trio of Hall of Famers known as the "Big Three" who led the Celtics to five NBA Finals appearances and three NBA championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986. He became the first player to shoot over 60% from the field and 80% from the free-throw line in the same season (1986-87). In 2021, McHale was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all time, named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team.

A three-time champion, 7-time All-Star, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee (1999) — McHale's only rookie card comes from a set that closed an era. Collectors building vintage Celtics dynasties, 1980s NBA collections, or PSA registry sets all need this card. Supply is genuinely limited, and recent raw price momentum confirms the market knows it.
